Make Tourism Better

Four questions with Manisha Pande, Village Ways

Villlage Ways is a grassroots travel enterprise that partners with consenting rural communities across India to create simple, wholesome, and authentic experiences. Established in 2005, it emerged from a desire to create a kind of holiday experience that uplifts, rather than extracts. In such experiences, the daily lives and traditions of village communities take center stage. But Village Ways is not just a collection of holidays; it is a platform for meaningful exchange, sustainable livelihoods, and cultural preservation. Visitors experience life in villages, learn from farmers, artisans, and elders, and see a side of India that is often invisible in mainstream tourism.

This year, we celebrated our 20th anniversary in Khali Estate, the place where it all began. We reaffirmed our commitment to the communities and to our team, and we plan to slowly create more such experiences around the world.

What are you taking responsibility for?

Tourism in India has often misrepresented rural communities, and packaged them as quaint or exotic, without giving local people a real say in how they were presented or how the economic benefits were distributed. Communities were missing out on both pride and opportunity. With a gentle opportunity like this, the likelihood that communities would come together to preserve their traditions, skills, and stories increased, even if just a little.

Village Ways takes responsibility for ensuring that rural communities are not passive subjects of tourism, but active creators of it. We take responsibility for co-designing travel experiences that honor local knowledge, protect the environment, and generate meaningful income for local families. We take responsibility for building tourism that is ethical, sustainable, and rooted in care: for the land, for traditions, for relationships, and care for the visitors who come with curiosity and respect.”

Why are you doing this?

We do this because no one understands a village better than the people who live there. Rural India is rich with culture, crafts, ecological knowledge, and ways of living that are often overlooked. But when tourism bypasses these communities, the benefits flow elsewhere, and local pride diminishes.

We are creating a model of tourism where the village itself sets the terms. Where farmers, artisans, and storytellers lead the experience, and visitors come not just to see, but to learn, connect, and participate. Where women have a voice and can influence decision making in a real way. We want the youngters in these villages to see value in staying connected to their home, to their skills, and to their land. We want communities to feel ownership over tourism, and for visitors to experience India beyond postcards, luxury hotels, or curated ‘Instagram moments.’

We do this because we believe that ethical tourism is the only way to strengthen communities, preserve traditions, and inspire both visitors and locals to imagine a future where rural life is vibrant, respected, and sustainable.

What are you doing?

At Village Ways, we create immersive experiences where visitors live in villages, explore them and their surrounding environments on foot or bicycle, learn local crafts, cook and eat traditional meals, participate in farming or ecological work, and develop a more intimate curiosity about the hosts and their families. We partner directly with communities to co-create itineraries that showcase local knowledge, ensuring that every interaction benefits the people involved.

We train young community members to become guides, storytellers, and hospitality hosts, so that they can directly shape the visitor experience. We focus on small-group, low-impact travel, always ensuring that the land, traditions, and community wellbeing are prioritized over commercial gain. From setting up homestays and craft workshops to curating treks and river journeys, every Village Ways experience is designed to be participatory, educational, and mutually enriching.

What is your impact?

Village Ways has created sustainable livelihoods for hundreds of families across multiple states in India. Farmers earn additional income by hosting guests, artisans sell their crafts directly to visitors, and young community members gain skills in guiding, hospitality, and storytelling.

Beyond economics, Village Ways has fostered pride, confidence, and agency in communities that were often sidelined in mainstream tourism. Visitors leave with a deeper understanding of rural India and a sense of connection, while communities gain visibility, dignity, and opportunity.

The impact is both tangible and transformative: children see their elders’ knowledge valued, young people imagine futures within their villages, and traditions that were fading are now actively practiced, shared, and celebrated. Village Ways has shown that tourism, when co-created with care, can be a force for community empowerment, cultural preservation, and ecological stewardship.
